Debating Confucian Political Philosophy

Symposium on Sungmoon Kim’s Public Reason Confucianism (Cambridge University Press, 2016)
(Venue: Social Sciences Chamber, 11/F, The Jockey Club Tower, Centennial Campus, HKU)

Sungmoon Kim presents “public reason Confucianism” as the most attractive option for contemporary East Asian societies that are historically and culturally Confucian. Public reason Confucianism is a particular style of Confucian democratic perfectionism in which comprehensive Confucianism is connected with perfectionism via a distinctive form of public reason. It calls for an active role for the democratic state in promoting a Confucian conception of the good life, at the heart of which are such core Confucian values as filial piety and ritual propriety.

Roundtable on the Future of Confucian Political Philosophy
(Venue: Function Room, 11/F, The Jockey Club Tower, Centennial Campus, HKU)

In recent years, Confucian political philosophy has become both more international and more diverse. Political theories from multiple traditions have been brought into dialogue with Confucianism, and the distinct experiences of modernity in societies around the world have challenged and stimulated Confucian thinkers. This Roundtable brings together scholars with a wide range of backgrounds to discuss the issues they see as most central to the future of Confucian political philosophy.
